Summary

Be terrified。
It's you I love,
perfect man,
Greek God, my own;
but I know you'll go,
betray me, stray
from home。
So better by far for
me if you were stone。
—from "Medusa"

Stunningly original and haunting, the voices of Mrs。 Midas, Queen Kong, and Frau Freud, to say nothing of the Devil's Wife herself, startle us with their wit, imagination, and incisiveness in this collection of poems written from the perspectives of the wives, sisters, or girlfriends of famous—and infamous—male personages。 Carol Ann Duffy is a master at drawing on myth and history, then subverting them in a vivid and surprising way to create poems that have the pull of the past and the crack of the contemporary。

A collection of poetry well known for its accessibility and feminist commentary, ‘The World’s Wife’ by Carol Ann Duffy was an intriguing look into relationship dynamics。 From traditional roles of husband and wife to rebels with a cause, each poem demands reflection and offers meaning in clear and effective prose。 This is a collection to come back to in the future, and a poet to read more of。

Bring me the wine-cellar key。 Let the less-loving one be me。Witty, incisive, erudite and playful, I cannot compliment this collection enough。 Duffy's empowered and gutsy mythical women dance across the pages, reinforced by the sonic unity of Duffy's verse。 Here's another example of her witty lyricism:Look, we all have wishes; granted。But who has wishes granted? There are bullet tears in my eyes。Are you terrified? This collection wasn't my favourite。 Some poems didn't hit at all。 Mrs Quasimodo, Mrs Kong and Medusa were powerful and stunning, however, and actually had me in tears。 Especially Mrs Kong。。。 oh my God: I get more emotional the more I read it again。 There are bullet tears in my eyes。Are you terrified? Reading these poems was a real journey for me。 At first, I struggled with the way the poet seemed to hate men but the more I read it, the more genius I realised was contained in the lines。Some of these poems are so beautiful and evocative, I have read them hundreds of times but they still make me shiver。 I have a battered copy of the collection covered in my notes and annotations。 When I was living abroad I bought the Kindle version because I needed to read some of these poems。 The collection is Reading these poems was a real journey for me。 At first, I struggled with the way the poet seemed to hate men but the more I read it, the more genius I realised was contained in the lines。Some of these poems are so beautiful and evocative, I have read them hundreds of times but they still make me shiver。 I have a battered copy of the collection covered in my notes and annotations。 When I was living abroad I bought the Kindle version because I needed to read some of these poems。 The collection is a salute to women, and especially to the women in the background of our stories, myths, and histories。 Duffy brings them to the front and lets them tell their stories and it's such a gift。 。。。more

I really like the unique idea of providing women who were overshadowed by their husbands in myths a voice。 Honestly not a big fan of poetry but this was quite fun and interesting to analyse。 My favourite poem is still Little Red Cap。

'Wasn't I beautiful? Wasn't I fragrant and young?Look at me now。'  Another outstanding collection from Carol Ann Duffy。 The World's Wife takes traditional legends and myths historically dominated by male figures and shrewdly flips them on their head, deftly portraying the female perspective。 The result is comical。 Mrs Sisyphus: 'That's him pushing the stone up the hill, the jerk'。 Some of the mythical references went beyond me and I had to resort to google - which only further revealed the exten 'Wasn't I beautiful? I'm really unsure how to rate this, so I'll leave it as is。 I usually do not read poetry。 I have been "traumatized" by the boring stuff they made us study in school and still have some sort of aversion to it。 Had it not been for the Read Harder challenge, I don't think I would have picked up this book (or any other poetry for that matters)。That being said, I was pleasantly surprised。 It took me a while to get through it, I was mostly reading one or two poems here and there, but I can't say I dis I'm really unsure how to rate this, so I'll leave it as is。 I usually do not read poetry。 I have been "traumatized" by the boring stuff they made us study in school and still have some sort of aversion to it。 Had it not been for the Read Harder challenge, I don't think I would have picked up this book (or any other poetry for that matters)。That being said, I was pleasantly surprised。 It took me a while to get through it, I was mostly reading one or two poems here and there, but I can't say I disliked the experience。 If anything, I enjoyed the multiple references in this book, and it's probably the most I ever enjoyed of poetry。 But I'm still not sure it's my thing and i don't know how to rate it, so I'll leave it at this review。 。。。more

I recently took a class on Greek Mythology, and during a Google search to learn more about Eurydice, came across a poem by Carol Ann Duffy of the same name。 I loved it, especially the line towards the end “I waved once and was gone。” I began to look for more poems by Ms。 Duffy (and I normally do not read poetry) and learned that Eurydice is just one of the poems in this collection。If you’re fond of Greek Mythology, and particularly of the female characters, this may just be the book for you。 Whi I recently took a class on Greek Mythology, and during a Google search to learn more about Eurydice, came across a poem by Carol Ann Duffy of the same name。 I loved it, especially the line towards the end “I waved once and was gone。” I began to look for more poems by Ms。 Duffy (and I normally do not read poetry) and learned that Eurydice is just one of the poems in this collection。If you’re fond of Greek Mythology, and particularly of the female characters, this may just be the book for you。 While not every poem is based on Greek mythology, many are。 We have such poems as “Mrs。 Midas,” “Penelope,” “Medusa” and more。 I enjoyed this collection and will definitely be receptive to more poetry by Ms。 Duffy in the future; this one was a delight!NOTE: I should add this is very short, and could be read in a day with no problem。 I limited myself to one or two poems a day so that I could stretch it out a bit。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this collection of poems playing with male characters from (mostly European) history, literature, mythology。。。 as told by significant women in their lives。。。 and/or occasionally the character is rewritten as a woman。 clever and funny。 some made me laugh out loud 😆I think my favourite is still 'Queen Kong' 😃♥🦍 tho so many great ideas, turns of phrase, subversions, inversions, endings/outcomes。 accessed as an audiobook from RNIB library, really nicely read by Lizzy Hoply 🙂 I really enjoyed this collection of poems playing with male characters from (mostly European) history, literature, mythology。。。 as told by significant women in their lives。。。 and/or occasionally the character is rewritten as a woman。 clever and funny。 some made me laugh out loud 😆I think my favourite is still 'Queen Kong' 😃♥🦍 tho so many great ideas, turns of phrase, subversions, inversions, endings/outcomes。 accessed as an audiobook from RNIB library, really nicely read by Lizzy Hoply 🙂 。。。more

When I first starting reading this book of poetry, I couldn't stop, I had to read every line immediately, had to hear what she was saying, had to hear these women, a visceral response in me it was。 I was gorging on something I didn't even know I was hungry for。 My copy is a library book, but I have ordered my own copy so that I can keep returning to these poems to re-read, absorb, savour and laugh all over again, because this body of work is nothing short of genius。 There are a number of feminis When I first starting reading this book of poetry, I couldn't stop, I had to read every line immediately, had to hear what she was saying, had to hear these women, a visceral response in me it was。 I was gorging on something I didn't even know I was hungry for。 My copy is a library book, but I have ordered my own copy so that I can keep returning to these poems to re-read, absorb, savour and laugh all over again, because this body of work is nothing short of genius。 There are a number of feminist readings of ancient stories that have been flooding the market recently。 I have bought and read every one I could get my hands on, and whilst most of them are very accomplished, some beige, some stridently and chaotically misandrist, none of them compare to the wit and insight of these poems。 Most of the poems are intricate stories that took me on a journey not simply through literary history, which alone would have been wonderful enough, but through each woman's relationship with each male archetype and through her somehow lost archetypes in turn, through each woman's unique emotional and sexual response somehow inextricably linked。 And sometimes too towards the shadow of self-loathing and primal instincts, the joy of love, and how all this relates to us today as women。 I laughed out loud many times and will again。 This book makes me love words and reading all over again and makes me want to shout over rooftops。 Essential reading。 。。。more

“…so I tell you now, daughters or brides of the Lord, that the closest I felt to the power of God was the sense of a hand lifting me, flinging me down, lifting me, flinging me down, as my baby pushed out from between my legs where I lay in the road in my miracle, not a man or a pope at all。”

Since I'm studying Carol Ann Duffy's collection 'Mean Time', I was interested to explore her other works and I was not disappointed。 Every one her poems contains her unique style of dramatic monologue and every persona she adopts as her speakers creates a sense of empathy, recoil and pain。 The way she crafts meanings is melodic, creating a message that is undeniably compelling。 A fascinating study into the voices often left unheard and forgotten。 Since I'm studying Carol Ann Duffy's collection 'Mean Time', I was interested to explore her other works and I was not disappointed。 Every one her poems contains her unique style of dramatic monologue and every persona she adopts as her speakers creates a sense of empathy, recoil and pain。 The way she crafts meanings is melodic, creating a message that is undeniably compelling。 A fascinating study into the voices often left unheard and forgotten。 。。。more
